A Laid-Back Day for Bloody Mary’s in Bluff Country

Although I didn’t have a detailed itinerary for the day, I had a mission: figure out who serves the best Bloody Mary in Elba, Minnesota.

My morning began with a hearty breakfast and a Bloody Mary at Elba House Coffee & Spirits. After visiting the Amish Greenhouses, I wrapped up my afternoon at Mauer Brothers Tavern and Grill and Tony’s Saloon.

Tucked into Minnesota’s scenic bluff country, near Whitewater State Park, Elba is perfect for a day trip. Whether you’re hiking, riding your side-by-side, fishing, or just out for a relaxing drive, a well-crafted Bloody Mary is a perfect finish.

Conveniently, each bar are within easy walking distance, so you can hit all three spots without hopping back in the car. Let’s dive into my picks for the Best Bloody Mary’s in Elba.

🚶‍♂️ Traveler Tip: Each bar are within walking distance—perfect for your own Bloody Mary crawl!

Table of Contents:

1️⃣ Mauer Brothers Tavern and Grill

The Vibe

Mauer Brothers is a fifth-generation family-run bar and grill, known for its burgers, sandwiches, and nostalgic décor. From taxidermy mounts, retro teal diner booths that haven’t changed in decades, and a laid-back, nostalgic vibe.

The Drink

As for the Bloody Mary, Mauer’s makes their own mix, and you can choose from Regular, Spicy, or Horseradish. I like to mix half Spicy and half Horseradish for the best of both worlds. The drink comes garnished with a cheese curd, green olive, pickle, beef stick, and of course, a beer chaser.

Taste Notes: Medium-bodied with a smooth tomato base and just the right horseradish bite. Not too spicy, not too mild—just a nice zippy finish that hits the spot without overpowering your tastebuds.

🚶‍♂️Traveler Tip: Mix and match the flavor options to find your ideal flavor.

2️⃣ Tony’s Saloon

The Vibe

Next up, Tony’s Saloon blends the old with the new. Outside, it still looks like a classic saloon. Inside, it’s been freshened up with bright décor and a large outdoor patio area that’s perfect for sunny days.

The Drink

Tony’s Bloody Mary’s are made with pepper-infused vodka, and you can really taste it—bold and front-loaded. The glass is rimmed with celery salt, garnished with a pickle and beef stick, and comes with a beer chaser.

Taste Notes: The first sip packs a peppery punch from the infused vodka. It’s bold up front but mellows into a savory, smooth blend. Medium thickness, easy to sip, and great balance once your palate adjusts.

🚶‍♂️Traveler Tip: Come thirsty—not hungry. Food options are limited, but the conversation and cocktails are plentiful.

3️⃣ Elba House Coffee & Spirits

The Vibe

Lastly, Elba House is a cozy little place with a welcoming atmosphere offering homemade dishes, and specialty coffee drinks. The inside is decked out in antiques, and the outdoor patio (made from a refurbish fifth wheel trailer and grain bin) has views of the Elba Fire Tower.

The Drink

Elba House use a combination of three different mixes, creating a unique base. It’s garnished with a pickle and olive, served with a beer chaser.

Taste Notes: Thicker but drinkable, smooth tomato flavor with balanced seasoning. It wasn’t spicy, but flavorful and smooth. I’d order it again—next time with pepper-infused vodka for an extra kick.

🚶‍♂️Traveler Tip: Pair your Bloody Mary with their Whitewater Omelette—the perfect breakfast combo!

Final Thoughts

So, which one was the best?

Mauer’s was my personal favorite, but honestly? You can’t go wrong with any of them. Each one brought its own unique taste. None of the drinks were overly spicy—in true Minnesota fashion—but all were flavorful and worth ordering again.

So, if you ever find yourself in Elba, MN, do your own Bloody Mary tour! And if Bloody’s aren’t your thing? Grab a cold beer and enjoy the company.
